The annual Apprenticeship Conference has recently taken place in Birmingham, here are a few of the highlights from the event and also the details on registering your interest to attend in London in 2020.

This years event saw Kirsty Wark of newsnight host the event which was attended by Colleges, Employers and Training Providers over the few days in Birmingham. This year in partnership with the Department for education over 1200 were able to access updates on policies, strategies and also hold councils and debates on how success can be delivered in the future.

The Agenda covered many varying and different agendas but many discussions were around March’s National Audit Report which worryingly highlighted that with current trends apprenticeship programmes are not currently going to be sustainable. The following public Accounts Committee meeting and hearing saw Officials from government and many Members of Parliament raise major concerns and then put them through the mill specifically around value for monday and that affordability.

Key speakers at the event from Ofsted’s Chief of Inspections Amanda Spielman and also Sir gerry Berragan who is the Technical Education Chief for the Institute of Apprenticeships. Other key speaking included Anthony Knowles (Education and Skills Funding Agency). Mark Dawe (Association of Learning and Employment Provides), Sarah Flynn (University of Hertfordshire), Steve Kirk (abingdon & Whitby College), Toni Carter (Rochdale Borough Council) and Louise Powell (Head of Education & learning) at Travis Perkins.

The agenda was one of the best yet in its fifth year and was packed with workshops, prolific speakers, vital information updates for everybody involved within the apprenticeship sectors. Considering where they have come from after the initial brainstorming with Matt Hancock who was the skills minister at the time, this event is going from strenght to strenght and next year looks to be even better already.

The event this year was closed by Anne Milton (Skills Minister) and on the Thursday night a gala dinner was held where this year’s winners of the AAC awards were all announced.
